I started this blog last year, left it, deleted it, now im starting again. I just can't help but to do that thing where I write something, think its cool and then look back with mild embarassment. But im not so bothered now. Embarassments fine. Feeling all clever when your not is fine. And I wanted to kick off with my film+fashion blog. Please note most of these films are pretty squeaky clean-bubblegum like so if any one wants to mention something a tad more gritty that I have over looked please feel free to email me on foundacriminaluseforapillow@hotmail.com
So you know those days when ur feeling shit? Chuck one of these films on. They represent to me good harmless fun and name check all my fashiony boxes.
Well I've name checked Romy and Michelle in my title, cuz they make their own outfits, every scene is complete with some sort of chunky platform shoe, short sequin number or cherry accessories and the prom flash back where they've gone as "the Madonna twins"! Michelle would rather be unemployed than work in bargin margin and by the end they open their own store, style Heather Mooney (Jeanne Garfalo) and fold scarves all day!
Le Divorce is a cool film with Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts, where Kates character visits her older sister in Paris and delves into french culture. In short, she goes from laid back California hippy to Parisian chic and it's just really cool. I dont like the bit where she fucks the middle age womaniser tho. I much prefer the beardy boho charity worker.
Don't Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead is the best film. It's basically a young pre surgery Christina Applegate having to work on her summer vacation cuz her mom went away, and the babysitter from hell keeled over and died and they have no money. Rather than call mum up she goes to work to support her younger siblings. She fakes a cv and accidently gets the job of fashion assistant to Rose (the fabulous Joanna Cassidy of Blade Runner fame) who's head of a dodgy BHS style clothnig company. She has no idea what her job invloves, she can't use the fax machine and embezels petty cash. By the end she is designing her own line for them and holds a fashion show in her back garden, where she tehn does the whole movie confess all speech to all these buyers and company head honchos, its just so cool and the outfits are so early 90's. Hmmm think I might watch it now.
Clueless. How could this not be on the list? The knee socks and dolly t bars alone do it for me. I love Brittany Murphys make over.
Thirteen. Rachel Evan Wood is lead astray by her cool classsmate and ends up in all sorts of trouble, ie-drug use, self abuse, shoplifting, sexual deviance etc. It doesn't sound very fashiony but all this happens is amidst of Melrose Avenue shopping and pure trash LA, bare midriff, bangles, glitter and corset tops, motif skinny tees, customised trainers and leopard print jeans. In one scene they punch each others lights out whilst high then cover up their bruises and cuts with circus make up, face gems, flaos lashes and feather boas.
Factory Girl Sienna Miller, Edie Sedgewick, Warhol, 60's. It's not the best film kinda story/dialouge-wise, but I do love the outfits.
and then theres the no brainers-Devil Wears Prada and Confessions of a Shopaholic. As for TV, SUGAR RUSH, cuz i mean i loved Sugars trashy teenage thing and My So Called Life, cuz it was soooo grungy mid 90's, all those plaid shirts and ripped jumpers and ill fitting trousers, girls in shants and sneakers. and like if u were'nt like Rayanne and Angela then u were a cheerleader bascially. loved it. and obviously it was jared leto pre 30 seconds to mars. I failed to mention sex and the city cuz im just not a satc fan. I do like gossip girl tho, but I do hate Blake Lively..after Micha Barton..they give me hair envy of the highest calibre.
